[Letter] 1597 Feb. 22 [to Dom. Friderico Duci Wirtembergensi] / Essex.

The Earl of Essex writes on behalf of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, to Frederick I, Duke of Württemberg. Essex reaffirms his loyalty to Frederick and explains a delay in sending him the insignia of the garter. Frederick had visited England in 1592 and repeatedly solicited Elizabeth to be admitted to the Order of the Garter. After he became the Duke of Württemberg Elizabeth admitted him to the Order in 1597. Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor makes reference to him--an unnamed German duke not expected to come to Windsor--along with other references to German travelers.
